I Hate Jill Zarin Real Housewives of NY-Final Word, Luann de Lesseps June 27, 2010
I think that if anyone “renewed” this season or actually made the biggest change, it has to be Luann. Luann went from a poor me, my marriage is over, I was dumped by a Count via email, my 16-year marriage is my business and I am the only one who can talk about it, to well…happy!
Luann opened the season already pissed off at Mario for something that he said weeks earlier and pissed off at Bethenny for a comment she made the previous season about Luann not paying her way. She thought Bethenny talked behind her back, which was true. Luann said in her blog after the first episode that Mario said “Countless” TO her, when in fact, we find out that he said it to someone else and never meant for Luann to hear it. Not to debate whether or not Mario was right or wrong, but rather how Luann handled the situation.
Luann made a huge deal about Mario’s comment, another issue that was clearly saved for the camera’s, something that could have been resolved weeks before that. According to Ramona, she spoke with Luann just a few days before the yacht party, yet Luann never mentioned Mario’s rude comment. Luann was apparently upset enough to harp on Ramona about it on the yacht and cause unnecessary drama.
Luann claimed she only wanted an apology, she told Ramona to have Mario call her, yet when he did make that call and personally invite Luann to come to his home on Labor Day to discuss it, Luann refused to confront Mario. We know that Jill’s grubby little fingerprints were all over that one, but Luann should know better! Luann, didn’t you write a book about etiquette?
Luann’s meeting with Bethenny was surprising to start off the season, at the end of the previous season, it didn’t seem like there was anything for these two to talk about. Bethenny certainly seemed overly aggressive and angry with Luann and it wasn’t really clear why. I was a little taken aback with Bethenny’s interview comments like she needed to shower after the “fake hug” and the “drag queen” comment, there was just a little more anger than seemed necessary. We later find out that the meeting was originally scheduled for the day before and that Bethenny had to drive 90 minutes to make the meeting more convenient for Luann. So after Luann cancels the original meeting, she makes Bethenny come all the way to Luann’s local restaurant.
I think that now that the season is over, looking back, Bethenny was at the end of her rope with Luann’s passive aggressive comments. What prompted the “drag queen” comment was Luann’s underhanded comment about Bethenny’s Skinny girl car. Luann clearly didn’t get it, when Bethenny tried to explain that people walk around with designer names and don’t get paid for it, Luann tried to make Bethenny feel embarrassed about her “branded” car. That is typical Luann, she gives backhanded compliments and she belittles people with a smile and a giggle. Luann, didn’t you write a book about etiquette?
Luann’s allegiance to Jill was clear in the first episode, watching the two of them together was like watching two high school girls making prank phone calls over summer vacation. Luann showed how immature and self-centered she is by her enforcing Jill’s anger toward Bethenny. Luann didn’t give a shit about Jill, she just wanted to be Jill’s new BFF with the thought that she would be the show’s new sidekick to lead housewife, Jill.
When Jill and Luann had Bethenny on speakerphone, Luann encouraging Jill to lie about who was there in the room was pretty damn childish! What struck me most about Luann was her behavior after confrontations that Jill and Bethenny had that Luann witnessed. After the speakerphone incident, rather than allowing her friend, Jill, to talk about her feelings about the call, Luann had to go into her own experience with Bethenny. Again, after the meeting at Ramona’s, Jill was clearly distraught, her friend Luann adds, “she didn’t even say hello to me!” As if that was the most important thing that happened in the past few minutes. Not that it matters, but Bethenny didn’t have an opportunity to say “hello” when the first thing that Luann said to Bethenny was, “did you want to talk to Jill or did you want to talk to me?” When exactly was Bethenny supposed to say, “hello”?
It is always about Luann. If Luann was truly a friend to Jill, she would have been trying to help Jill to do what is best for Jill, not what is best for Luann, Luann wouldn’t constantly be infusing herself into the relationship between Jill and Bethenny. Without Luann being by Jill’s side encouraging and giving her opinion of Bethenny, things may have turned out differently. Better or worse, Luann did have influence over the relationship that Jill lost.
I don’t think that the “friendship” between Jill and Luann was real at all! It was a television friendship of convenience. They were not friends before the show began to film and now that filming is over, they seem to have gone back to casual acquaintances. We know that the housewives make a big deal about getting together, Kelly even posted a photograph on Twitter last week because she had lunch with Jill.
Luann has definitely turned around, at the reunion she seemed happier, more relaxed and even showed a sense of humor. Nothing Luann said at the reunion was in any way relevant. What Luann didn’t say was more relevant than anything that came out of her mouth.
First Luann refused to answer the charges that she and/or her ex-husband were unfaithful during their marriage. The fact that she didn’t deny it says it all. You either refuse to respond, or you deny it. If you refuse, you are admitting to the allegations, right?
The other question Luann refused to answer was whether or not her ex-husband does not like Jewish people. Even Andy Cohen made a funny face because of Luann’s non-responsive answer. Again, the refusal to really answer pretty much answers the question for us anyway.
Luann is pretending to be the classy ex-wife who would never say anything negative about her ex-husband out of respect for her children, yet she was able to find ways to slam the guy against the wall without getting attacked for outright slamming him. After all it was Luann who brought up how her ex, Alex would be “shocked” that she was dating a Jew. More passive aggressive behavior and yet, she took no slack for it at all. I am not saying that it is alright if Alex de Lesseps is a bigot, however, it coming from the hurt and bitter Luann, it may or may not be true. How fun for her to be able to slam her ex-husband and soil his name without him being able to do anything about it.
Luann started off the season firmly and confidently on “Team Jill” even asking Alex whose team she was on, her blog read:
“I honestly do not know whose side Alex is on and neither does she. She tries to stay neutral but is clearly having a difficult time”
By the time they filmed the reunion, Luann denied being on “Team Jill” and has clearly begun to distance herself from Kelly, turning her digs from Bethenny to Kelly. Luann questioned Kelly on her behavior on St. John, she said that she told Kelly not to go on the trip to begin with causing Kelly to roll her eyes and look at Luann with disgust.
Luann is a beautiful woman, I will give her that, however what Ramona was using as an “example” was true, it seems like we see Luann in the one-shoulder dresses all the time and her casual wear include the same suade tan colored boots. I have seen her in those same boots at least one hundred times.
At the beginning of the season Luann was constantly looking for reassurance that everyone thought she looked great, she was looking for compliments from anyone from her daughter’s friends to her former housekeeper/nanny, Rosanna. Throughout the season without even really noticing, Luann became more self-confident and no longer seemed to need to hear how great she looked at every turn. Whether it was just time healing her pain, finding a way to record a pitch poor song or if it was due to finding a man to love, Luann has changed and renewed, more than Ramona has.
I am not a fan of Luann’s, in fact I firmly believe that she’s just a “filler”, she’s dull and boring and with the one exception of affecting Jill’s relationship with Bethenny, Luann added nothing to the show whatsoever.
It’s difficult to tell whether or not Luann is a shoe-in for next season. She’s an original cast member, a plus on her side, she’s not a fan favorite, good reason to dump her. She’s a constant if other changes are made, a reason to keep her. Dumping her would allow for new, more exciting housewives to come on board.
Until Next Time…
