I Hate Jill Zarin Top Chef All Stars – Double Elimination Jan 13, 2010
The show opens with Marcel going off on Dale over the last challenge. Using his best tough guy voice and hand gestures, he’s complaining that Dale won last week’s challenge by preparing only the minimum amount of dishes to ensure that the judges tasted his dish, clearly Marcel doesn’t think that Dale deserved to win.
The Chef’s awake to a message from Top Chef that they’re going fishing and it is obviously not for sport, we can see them cooking the catch of the day well before they’re told the complete details of the challenge.
The final 12 contestants are randomly broken into four teams of three chef’s, so they will be fishing as a team with two teams per boat and they will be cooking as a team using the fish that they catch.
Dale is the first to strike, the chef’s are told to fish for three hours and they’re to feed 200 people. With no Quick Fire Challenge today, this is for high stakes, no money but with two people going home its time to fish!
Tiffany F is thrilled, she’s actually excited about going fishing, her teammates, Antonia and Jamie are the first female’s to nab a big one, Antonia screams like a school girl as annoying as Vicki from Orange County. Fabio is first to strike gold for his team with a huge striped bass, Marcel and Richard round out the team and after a slow start are doing really well catching fish.
Fabio claims to be an expert fisherman but with Dale catching the first fish Fabio along with his teammates Richard and Marcel is failing miserably.
Team Four consists of Dale, Carla and Tre who by the way was wearing a white t-shirt looking very hot on that boat, he didn’t need to catch any fish because he looked so great the fish jumped right into the boat and lay at his feet. Carla describes Tre as a creature who buries himself under the sand, you don’t notice him until he laughs? Is she serious? I think Carla needs new glasses.
Carla looked like she was rowing the boat with her fishing rod but she was doing something right because she was catching the fish, Dale caught the biggest fish of the day and joked that it was bigger than Marcel.
All the teams finally catch enough fish to feed their allotted 200 people, Carla is unhappy with her Blue Fish as they can be oily and are typically known as garbage fish but she’s determined to make it work.
After fishing the teams take to the local farmer’s market and each team has $150 and 30-minutes to get everything they need for their amazing fish dish.
Jamie claims that she likes to cook simple, if by simple she means not cooking at all then she’s very successful and Tiffany decides it is important to keep her distance from Jamie. That’s tough to do when you’re teammates. Jamie complains, tired wants to go home, its too hot in the sun. Jamie’s going to be her own demise with her non-stop complaining.
During the chef’s off time, Tre said his wife gave him permission not to miss her while he’s gone but Tre tells us, “I miss my best friend” sigh, what a great guy! Angelo, another hottie, tells us that Mike Isabella is “gassy” which is a bit more information that I needed to hear but calling him a “blow fish” was pretty funny!
Fabio, Richard and Marcel’s strategy is to make only one dish for the whole team that way if the judges don’t like it, if they can’t figure out which one of them is responsible for the poor dish, they can’t send any of them home. I used to like Fabio and Richard but that was a real cop-out. Fabio handles all of the prep work. Richard tells us that that there are 7 elements in this dish that was Marcel’s idea, Richard is on Fabio to do all of the prep work, Richard cooks everything and Marcel puts it all together and does the finishing and plating. Richard was on Fabio all day giving him instructions and wanting him to hurry up with all of his prep work. Even Mike noted that Fabio took a beating from Richard.
Chef Tom shows up as the chefs are preparing their dishes. It never ceases to amaze me the smallest details that Tom notices and he questions why Richard, Fabio and Marcel are making only one dish. Clearly a “take note” moment for the future, Richard says Chef Tom is loading ammunition as Richard back-pedals saying he should have insisted on making two dishes. It is obvious that Marcel is pushy, obnoxious and will walk all over anyone who shows any signs of weakness.
The judges and diners enjoy the dishes prepared by Carla, Dale, Mike, Tiffany, Angelo and Mike but clearly the top three are Carla, Antonia and Dale’s dishes. Chef Tom tells Antonia that she would have won this competition if she had been on a stronger team. Tiffany F and Jamie’s dishes were bad enough to drag Antonia down into the bottom team.
Carla wins the challenge and a trip to the land of blunts and bongs, Amsterdam! Carla had prepared the exact same fish as Tiffany F yet Carla was smart enough to ensure that she is removes the skin and bloodline from her piece of fish while Tiffany who left the skin on the fish was, well …. Sent home.
The winners return to the stew room and Carla is so excited and yelling “I won I won” and Marcel, rather than congratulating her is an ass and tells her he can’t be excited because that means he’s on the bottom. That was pretty selfish of Marcel and it made Carla feel bad.
Team “One dish” Richard, Marcel and Fabio were lucky that their strategy worked, none of the three of them were sent home because the judges really couldn‘t decide which one of them did the worst job on one of the worst dishes of the evening. As Padma noted it’s difficult to tell who did what and who is responsible if the dish goes bad, this is exactly what this team wanted. Very disappointing for fans to watch this team work the challenge this way. All three of them should have been sent home for preparing only one dish.
Finally Jamie prepared a dish with a broth concocted of cucumbers and …wait for it…water! Can you imagine what that might have tasted like? A cucumber punch with no flavor. Jamie was right out the door behind Tiffany F.
And so with tonight’s double elimination, there are ten chef’s left, I expected Tiffany F to last a bit longer but Jamie’s departure was way overdue!
I miss Anthony Bourdain! I feel like we’ve been duped, we were promised that Tony Bourdain was on the judges panel for this All Star season yet it feels like we’ve rarely seen him this season. I do so love his blogs too.
Next week, classic Restaurant Wars will challenge the chefs and Anthony Bourdain is back with his wit and his palate, ready to judge the final 10.
Tomorrow don’t miss The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills followed by Watch What Happens Live with Camille Grammer. The drinking game of the night has to be each time Camille shrugs her shoulders, drink!
