The Fashion Show Finale/Ultimate Collection
There is a review of the season of competition with views of the various designers from the early days to the final days. We see relationships grow, designs change, and the quality of the work improve.
The final three designers in the competition for 125,000 dollars and a spread in “Harper’s Bazaar” are Dominique, Jeffrey and Calvin. The House of Emerald and The House of Nami no longer exist. Each designer is to create their own “Ultimate Collection.” Iman and the three designers are in a darkened room with the best and worst of each of the designers work from the many weeks of competition. Iman tells Dominique that she was a sleeper in the competition and that the judges did not notice her until her contribution to the designs in the “Time Capsule Challenge.” Iman tells Dominique that her umbrella dress from “The Lost and Found Challenge” shows that she is a “risk taker.” Iman tells Calvin that she still has nightmares from the first challenge’s yellow dress with a hideous flower that Calvin thought represented Iman. She shows the black dress that was to accent the vintage gloves as an example of Calvin’s best work. Iman tells Jeffrey that his work is truly original. She reminds us that she loved so many of his designs and wanted to take them home. Each of the designers will receive $3600 for materials. Jeffrey won two challenges so he has an additional $1,000. Dominique won two challenges, but she took immunity once in order to take greater risks so she only receives an additional $500. She tells us that this amount will be a help to her. Calvin never won an individual challenge, but he is confident because he has a good understanding of fabrics and how to work with them. Iman gives them a shock when she tells them that they are to create 9 fashions in 7 days. Jeffrey, in an interview, yells, “Noooooooooooo!” Dominique expresses shock with a giggle. Calvin says, “Good luck,” to the others because he knows this challenge of many garments is not a problem for him.
The designers sit on the floor in front of their designs to create their sketches and come up with a theme. Amazingly, all of the designers decided on the theme of their own journey. Calvin will do a collection of black garments. Dominique looks at chiffon in grays and purples. Jeffrey is going to honor his mother whose favorite color was red. Jeffrey says that every woman looks good in red. Calvin is spying on Jeffrey as Jeffrey looks at fabrics. Calvin says, “You have $1000 dollars and fabric you choose is poorly cheap.” Jeffrey thanks the staff of the fabric shop as they leave.
Isaac comes to the studio for his final meeting with each of the designers. He reminds them of what the judges have been requesting from them each week. Jeffrey, in an interview says, “ Me and Calvin started at the House of Emerald. I knew he didn’t like me and I wasn’t a crazy fan of his. Calvin has opened up as a person. He has a great concept.” Calvin says, that his “mood is a journey of me as an angry person.” He adds, “and then I end up here.” Calvin is going to use black and create a minimal design. Isaac points at a sketch and says that the collar is great, but Isaac wants Calvin to make the rest of the dress simple. Dominique is using wools in a soft purple. She stresses her feelings in the collection and says that the direction will be from “noise to silence.” There will be a coat and a jump suit to show her range. Jeffrey tells Isaac that the red of his collection was inspired by his beloved mother. Jeffrey tells us in an interview that his mother died when he was 20 and that she was the one who always believed in him. Jeffrey’s collection will be bold and modern. Isaac reinforces the need for simplification. He compliments Jeffrey on the great progress he has made over the period of the contest.
Calvin tells us in an interview that he is superstitious about the color red. Red is fire. Calvin was born in the year of water. “I don’t wear red. I think its bad luck for me.” His collection will be black and grays. Dominique tells us that Calvin knows patterns and that he works fast. She calls him a speed demon, but believes he does not edit well. Dominique is dyeing cloth to honor Cesar and what he has taught her in the competition. Calvin tells us that Cesar went home because of a dyed dress. Jeffrey is having trouble with proportions and seems rattled by having to create the designs that he has sketched.
Jeffrey is tired of suggestions from Calvin.
Calvin is done with two days to spare. The others are struggling. Calvin decides to create a red dress dedicated to his lover who is ill with two months to live. Should Calvin win, the prize will go to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. He will create “the perfect dress ever.”
Additional Challenge from Judges
Iman appears with a new challenge from the judges. Each of the designers will create a 10th design. She has cards with the requests from the judges. Calvin’s challenge is a pants suit; Jeffrey’s challenge is a strapless dress; and Dominique will make a design which is business attire. Iman has another surprise. Each of the designers will receive another pair of hands. Tamara is there to help Calvin. At one point, Calvin offered to go home to give her a second chance at the competition. Cindy is there for Jeffrey. David has returned to a joyful Dominique. The young couple reunite with such joy that Tamara wants to know what happened while she was away.
Jeffrey shows Cindy his very finished sketches, but she remarks that his designs are not on the rack. Calvin shows Tamara that he has finished everything. Dominique shows David that one of her designs is “like a homeless person.” Jeffrey is very unhappy with his fittings. Cindy tells us that Jeffrey has to get focused. She is on her knees sewing and tells Jeffrey to go and work on another garment.
All three designers meet with the fashion show designers to discuss hair and make up one day before “The Fashion Show.” Calvin wants “simple and sleek.” Danielle’s models will have a side part like her own hair. Jeffrey discusses the way the hair will look from behind.
David loves Dominique’s designs. Calvin looks at Dominique’s collection and says, “Every thing is like a big potato sack.” Calvin says, “My collection is very strong. Everything is unique and flattering a woman’s body. Oh, my God! I love this!” Tamara tells us that Calvin doesn’t have to worry about Dominique or Jeffrey. Jeffrey does not think he will be able to sleep.
The Ultimate Fashion Show
We see the three racks being wheeled across the busy street for the last time as the designer go to the location where “The Fashion Show” design team awaits. They do last minute fittings, steam folds on the clothes that are already on the models, and adjust the placement of belts on the models’ bodies. The producer of the fashion show asks the designers to look at the audience on a television screen and they see family members. Calvin sees his mother and sister. The mother has not been supportive of Calvin’s design career. She appears to look unhappy in the audience. Calvin’s sister is smiling.
The set for the first of the fashion shows is a forest scene. Calvin’s first desing is a black dress. Calvin tells us that “this is the new me.” Calvin tells us that his mother thinks fashion is a joke and she never smiles when the camera is on her face. Calvin describes his designs as the models walk the runway. He is happy and confident. He thinks the clothes are beautiful and he loves every single design. Calvin included a woman’s tuxedo as a part of the collection. At the end, a beautiful flowing bright red dress appears.
Dominique’s fashion show is meant to show “the city girl.” She feels it the collection is “new and improved me.” She uses “the grunge look.” She feels “fearless.” She is “no longer the quiet girl in the corner.”
Jeffrey’s fashion show starts with fusion Asian music, a darkened stage lit by many red candles with the an Asian stature in the distance against a golden sky. A model with white flowing pants walks the runway. Jeffrey tells us that he started the competition with a unisex collection, but grew to love the shape of a woman after many weeks of designing and creating for models. His colors are almost a gray/blue. He mentions harmony. Then a red underskirt is seen on a model with a long coat. After that, red becomes the moment. A red strapless dress meets the judge’s challenge. His final look is the dress created to honor his mother. It has long sleeves. Jeffrey tells us that he feels like a winner no matter what happens later.
The judges compliment all three of the designers and admire the collections. Then the judges ask Dominique to bring her models forward. The first dress represents “chaos and silence,” but one judge is confused by that statement. Isaac loves the business attire skirt, but Imam hates the extra cloth by the model’s hip reminding everyone that women (Iman herself) have issues with their hips. Glenda from “Harper’s Bazaar” tells Dominique that the clothes she is wearing at that moment is a better, fresher look. Dominique says, “My heart is in this!”
Jeffrey is told that his collection is “Bright, bold, and fearless.” Isaac says that Jeffrey’s strapless red gown is his “best dress ever!” Isaac calls the strapless dress, “Phenomenal!”The judges have issues with the tight leather top as the model looks uncomfortable. Isaac describes Jeffrey’s collection as an “orgasm.”
Calvin is told his most important dress was the final red dress. It has the design of his dress from the first challenge. That was the yellow, not tomato dress. This red dress is simple with no extras. Calvin has listened to the judges. Iman did not like Calvin’s pant suit. She thought his choice of fabric was wrong. Isaac loved the coat of the collection.
The designers are sent off stage and the judges discuss. We are told that Dominique has youthful exuberance and took big risks. Jeffrey went from unisex to having a wonderful understanding of a woman’s body. Calvin listened to the judges and edited himself. The final decision was difficult for the judges to make.
The designers come back. Iman speaks to Dominique and tells her that her collection is not “The Ultimate Collection.” Dominique hugs everyone and leaves. She tells us that she is more confident.
Calvin and Jeffrey stand alone and turn to see Jeffrey’s model in his final red dress walk on to the stage. Jeffrey won “The Ultimate Collection.”
Calvin tells us “the judge make a decision and the best one won.” Other designers compliment Jeffrey. Eduardo calls the collection, “Amazing!” There are tears and hugs from everyone.
