Now THIS was a great episode of Top Chef. I still believe that some of the more talented chef’s are gone and were eliminated too early, this is what Top Chef is all about!
With twists and turns coming fast and furious, the final three, Antonia, Richard and Mike were really put to the test tonight. Amazing what someone under pressure can handle. Padma pointed out to the chef’s seven classic Quick Fire Challenges from the past, and the chef’s knew they would be choosing one for their final Quick fire of the season.
Mikey chose first for his cousin Antonia. Mike admitted that he is gunning for Antonia, he wants her gone because he feels that Richard is the best chef left in the competition and he wants to beat the best. I think he’s selling Antonia a bit short but he’s probably right. Mike felt that cooking with all canned foods would challenge Antonia the most, and sticks her with the task that would make Phaedra proud.
Antonia gets to choose for Richard, she decides to award him with the hot dog challenge. That one was a bit surprising as I thought there were more difficult ones available but there you have it.
Finally Richard chooses Mike’s challenge. The Classic Quick fire of the One Pot seemed to be a good choice as Richard remembers Mikey saying he always needs 7 pots and pans to prepare a good dish. Unfortunately Richard was a bit short-sighted as that wasn’t anywhere near the most difficult Quick fire available.
Mr. Wolfgang Puck, Chef to the stars, is tonight’s guest judge and as they put 45 minutes on the clock, he wishes them all good luck. But a few minutes into the challenge Padma returns to the kitchen to throw the chef’s a curve ball. The Chef’s now have another obstacle to overcome, Richard will have to finish his dish using only one hand, Mike will have to finish with no knives or hand tools and finally Antonia will have to complete her dish attached to former contestant Carla Hall.
Mike didn’t find it at all difficult to complete his dish without any tools, he had already cut up all of his ingredients and was simply waiting for his dish to cook, he stood laughing at Richard and Antonia as they struggled to complete their tasks.
Wolfgang and Padma tasted the three completed dishes and awarded Mikey the win saying that Richards Hotdogs had too much catsup and Antonia’s flavors were too strong, something that Antonia struggled with all season and continues to make that mistake throughout the finals.
The Elimination Challenge had the chef’s preparing a “Last Supper” for three famous chef’s. Wolfgang Puck returned to enlighten Richard that his final meal would be Hungarian Goulash with Apple Strudel. Michelle Bernstein told Mikey she wanted Fried Chicken with Biscuits and Gravy. Finally Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto informed Antonia that he wanted Meso Soup, perfect rice like his mother makes and Hamachi.
The luck of the draw had nothing to do with this one, Mike Isabella purposely chose the match up the chef’s as he won the Quick Fire and he purposely gave Antonia the most difficult challenge. Richard’s was also difficult as he was the only one instructed he was to create a dessert. Mike should have won this hands down but he didn’t.
The diners enjoyed Richard’s Goulash and Apple Strudel the best and he was immediately sent on to the final two. Based on the comments of the diners it seemed as though Mike would join Richard. Antonia once again blew them away with the spices and Chef Morimoto was not at all impressed with is final meal. I wonder why Antonia doesn’t listen to the judges criticism and ease up on the spices when she’s cooking.
Rather than announcing the winner, Padma pulls out an envelope, twist number three of the night. Mike and Antonia who look completely spent already are to return to the kitchen to prepare one bite of anything they want to prepare, winner takes all and will join Richard in the final two.
Antonia prepares Grouper and Mikey serves Steak Tartar with Lobster, his version of surf and turf. The judges tell Antonia, once again, she was heavy handed with the spices but Mike was told by Chef Tom Colicchio that his steak was bland. The judges vote was literally split three to three until the final vote was cast by Chef Wolfgang Puck and in dramatic fashion Padma asks Antonia to pack her knives and go.
Next week it will be Richard against Mike and the winner will be Top Chef of the gang who lost Top Chef in the past. They were both beat in their original appearance on the show so are they really a Top Chef?
I still think that more talented chef’s have already gone home. Jen, Dale, Casey and even Marcel seem to be more talented than Mike and Antonia. Chef’s like Angelo, Fabio and Tre are more attractive than Mikey and Richard. Get it together Bravo, we’re a smart mostly female audience, keep the cute guys damnit! The season was disappointing watching brilliant chef’s going home while we watch Mike Isabella and Antonia Lofaso complete to get into the final two.
I think that between Mike and Richard, we have to go with Richard to win it all.
