Top Chef Masters by Quincy IL
I’m with the Band
The numbers are dwindling and we have 7 chefs competing tonight for their charities. There will be two competitions a quick fire challenge and after dividing into two teams, they will create a feast fit for a rock star.
The Chefs are in their kitchen for the quick fire challenge and they feel comfortable in that environment when Curtis Stone surprises them with a 7 minute time limit. We are told that it takes 2 minutes to heat a pan. The chefs will prepare two dishes per person. The prize is $5,000 for their charity and immunity.
Hugh is featured in many of the interviews as he has a quick wit and is self-deprecating. He also has one eyebrow which he pointed out. Many of the chefs decide to make foie gras because that can be properly cooked in 5 minutes. The other dishes include caviars, scallops, apples, and tuna. Hugh describes his dish as cat food. Several people drizzle blood orange juice.
Curtis returns with another surprise. The Chefs will judge each other’s dishes. Traci does not like this as it creates animosity within the group. First they taste the dishes. The comments are bitter, too salty, not enough salt, and perfect.
The Chefs are given 1 through 7 on cards which they hold up as their dishes are discussed. Hugh rates his dish the lowest and he stands by the decision with humor.
The final ratings were:
4 Mary Sue
The Feast/Elimination Challenge
Since Traci won the Quick Fire, she picks the members of her team. She takes four chefs which may be an issue later. They wear black aprons. Traci picked: Hugh, Naomi and Mary Sue.
The remaining chefs will wear red aprons and they are Floyd, Alex, and Selena. The leader eventually will be Alex.
Meet the Rock Stars: Maroon 5
The Chefs tell us that they have experience cooking for celebrities. They will travel to the Roosevelt Hotel in LA (Hollywood) to create a feast for the rock stars that have traveled extensively and eaten in fine restaurants all over the planet Earth. The chefs will create a family meal, but the requests by the rock stars are all over the map. Some of the requests are Japanese steak, corn, vegetarian, and a Thanksgiving feast. The prize is $10,000 for the winner. One chef will be sent home also.
There will be an issue of time management so the chefs have to make their shopping lists on the way to Whole Foods, shop quickly, prepare the food in travel buses moving on the expressway with drivers from a senior citizen home and moving traffic that people trapped on the street in downtown New York City would envy.
During the menu planning, Traci wonders if she makes the correct choices when it came to selecting her team. They two teams shop quickly in Whole Foods, but the red team leaves long before the black team. The cooking space is limited and the chefs have to deal with the moving vehicle which sometimes seem like a scrambler ride from an amusement park.
The black team complains about the lack of space. One chef wishes she could make the salad on the floor, but does not. The red team uses the toilet to sear steak. (I would send Floyd home for that.)
Alex of the red team states that he has 30 years of experience so she makes 4 dishes. Selena has been in the bottom in the Quick Challenge and she has concerns. When they are ready to serve, it is Alex who has ruined the pasta by starting it too soon. It looks awful and tastes bad.
The red team is happy with their dishes.
The Dining Room
The Roosevelt Hotel Dining Room looks like King Arthur’s dining hall. There is a long table and high back chairs. The three judges Curtis, Stone, Ruth Reichel and James Oreland are on one side. Gail Simmons is also at the table. The Maroon 5 come in and sit on the other side. These young men have a great sense of humor and seem up for the task of eating the fabulous dishes.
The menus of the teams are amazingly similar. Both have corn soup and steak. Both include the foods of Thanksgiving. The black team has a Spanish edge with chips, guacamole and margaritas. Spanokopita was requested by a rock star because his mother makes that dish so both teams complied. They black team serves last, but when the margaritas arrive, the party begins.
The judges are critical and the rock stars also have likes and dislikes. One says that he was surprised that the food was so much like his mom’s. There are agreements and disagreements when judging the good. James Oreland states that the roof of his mouth was damaged by a corn crust. He thinks the tapioca was undercooked. One of the rock stars loves the tapioca. Everyone loves the gravy which a rock star points out covered and ordinary piece of meat.
At the end of the judging, the rock stars give thumbs up and tell us that they would hate to hate to have their performance ripped apart on television.
The black team wins and Traci’s charity will receive $10,000.
The red team will have a member eliminated and there is much discussion. Alex’s pasta was awful. Floyd’s salad was too simple. Selena has problems with flavor. At the last moment, Alex is told to pack his knives and leave. The other chefs hug him and wish him well. He knew that his offerings had problems and this was for charity so he was glad that he participated.
Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. While they were in high school, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Adam Levine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, bass guitarist Mickey Madden, and drummer Ryan Dusick formed a garage band called Kara’s Flowers and released one album in 1997. After a brief period they reformed with guitarist James Valentine, and pursued a new direction as Maroon 5. The following year they released their debut album Songs About Jane, which contained four hit singles: “Harder to Breathe“, “This Love“, “She Will Be Loved” and “Sunday Morning“; it also enjoyed major chart success, going gold, platinum, and triple platinum in many countries around the world.
